American Tribal Style (ATS) is an interesting fusion of North-African dances, flamenco and dances
of East-India. Tribal style doesn't copy movements directly from other dance forms but modifies
them fit to its vocabulary. Typical for this dance form is group work and improvisation. ATS is
not authentic folklore but it is authentic American Tribal Style, unique and original. Outlook is
dramatic and visual with strong colors. Jewellery is massive and abundant and dancer can use even
flowers to emphasize and adorn her beauty.
Significant for this dance form is interaction of the group during the performance. Improvisation
is also an essential part of the Tribal style. The group follows the leader dancer through the
signals she gives while dancing. The leadership migrates during the dance from the dancer to
another according certain rules. Each dancer have to pay attention for their leader to be able to
follow her, that way even the big group can dance and execute movements simultaneously.
Like any dance also Tribal style has evolved from the days it was first time danced in public.
Even until the point that it's necessary to categorize it into traditional, fusion, neo-tribal and
etc. Also new styles are based on ATS originally created by Jamila Salimpour and brought further
by Carolena Nericcio. They have born from the need to find new and other ways to express Tribal
Dance.
